Energy research Centre of the Netherlands

Working towards a sustainable energy system for the future

The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) is the largest research centre in the Netherlands in the field of energy. It develops high-level knowledge and technology for a sustainable energy system and transfers it to the market. With about 900 employees, ECN acts in the area between fundamental research at universities and implementation of technology in society.

ECN and the Bioenergy NoE

Biomass research at ECN is part of the unit for Biomass, Coal & Environmental research. With about 40 researchers and an annual turnover of €8 million, biomass RD&D is dedicated to thermo-chemical conversion of biomass into heat and power, synthesis gas and synthetic natural gas, and into transportation fuels and chemicals.

A large number of facilities for biomass conversion; combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal treatment, gas-cleaning and catalytic synthesis are available at a lab and pilot-scale.

Within the Bioenergy NoE, ECN is leading the area Biofuels for Transport.
